4 Ways For Employers To Avoid Workers' Compensation Fraud

Insurance Blog

Workers compensation fraud can be committed by healthcare providers, employers, and employees. If you are an employer, you stand to lose money and work hours if a healthcare provider or one of your employees commit workers' compensation fraud. You may risk higher insurance premiums as well as have to pay certain parts of your employee compensation. However, there are a few ways you can help discourage fraud within your company, such as:

Create a Positive Work Environment

If your employees enjoy going to work every day and feel like they are part of a team, they will feel less inclined to commit fraud that will hurt the company. Additionally, they may be more likely to report fraud when they encounter it, either from other employees, from lawyers, or from healthcare providers. Some ways you can create a positive work environment include having team bonding activities such as parties or happy hour, show your gratitude for your employees' work with awards or compensation, and be positive. Something as simple as a friendly hello and making sure upper management regularly interacts with employees at all levels can help create an environment where employees are less likely to take advantage of your company.

Have an Anonymous System for Reporting Fraud

If an employee learns about fraud, they may be unlikely to report it unless they can be assured of some type of anonymity. You should have a system in place for reporting suspected fraud to the HR department in a way that will not harm the employee who makes the report. You should inform employees of this process when they are hired and remind them of it during annual employee training periods. An employee will be more likely to report fraud if they can be assured they will not suffer for their report. Some employers even offer compensation to employees who report fraud if the suspected fraud is confirmed.

Have Healthcare Provider Suggestions for Your Employees

In most states, employees can choose which health care provider they go to for their workers' compensation claims. However, if a company has trustworthy doctors they can send their employees to, the employee may take the suggestion. Often, employees do not know who to go to and then they look up a workers compensation doctor and may be pulled into a mill or a fraudulent practice without knowing it. By making suggestions, you can protect you and your employees from this.
