How To Purchase An SR-22 Insurance Plan

Insurance Blog

When you find out that you need SR-22 insurance, you will not want to delay. If you delay, you might miss the deadline, which could result in losing your driver's license. Instead, you will need to buy a policy; but how do you purchase an SR-22 insurance plan? If you have never done this before, you might not know where to even begin. Here is a list of the steps you can take to buy a policy when you find out that you need one.

Understand What SR-22 Insurance Is

Before you rush into buying a plan, you might want to learn a few basic things about SR-22 insurance, including what it is. While people often think that it is insurance, it really is not an insurance plan. It is simply proof that you have auto insurance. It is a form that your auto insurance company provides to you and to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to show that you have auto insurance that meets the state minimum requirements. If you need SR-22, you must buy a plan to continue driving. Without a policy in effect, the state can cancel your driving privileges.

Contact Your Current Auto Insurance Company

To begin the process of buying SR-22 insurance, you can contact your current auto insurance company. If you do not have auto insurance at this time, you can move on to the next step. If you do have a current policy, you can contact them to find out if they offer SR-22 insurance. They may or may not. It depends on the company.

Call Other Companies

Next, you can contact a few other companies. The goal is to request several quotes for SR-22 insurance coverage. If you can find several insurance providers that offer it, you can compare their quotes.

Choose Your Plan and Pay the Premiums

Once you have a few quotes, you can compare them. The main thing to look for is the coverage types and amounts. Do the quotes provide the coverage you need? Does it meet the state minimum requirements? Once you find the company with the best coverage and costs, you can pay the premiums to start your policy. You might need to bring the document to your local DMV by a specific date to prove that you have coverage.

If you follow these steps, you can purchase an SR-22 insurance policy to protect your driving privileges. If you have questions or need a quote, start calling auto insurance providers, such as Clover Insurance, to find some that offer SR-22 insurance.
